Artist Statement

As a maker of photographs and objects, I collect electronic waste and use it as both subject matter and material, creating dialogues between material and content, medium and form. I experiment with various types of analog and obsolete devices and combine them with current digital technologies to produce imagery. I explore the possibility of each tangible remnant of digital waste by transforming it through laborious methods in my sculptures.

My current practice explores the intersection of technology, consumerism and cultural history. I began learning Chinese knotting in 2022 as a way to deepen the connection with my roots as a first generation Chinese American, and to engage the physical and temporal landscape as a person between two cultures. I use electronic cables destined for landfill to create sculptures using the technique of a traditional Chinese folk art, while creating photographs of these sculptures implementing a hybrid of analog and digital processing methods. Through this process-oriented approach, I reflect on an existential dilemma of living in a consumer society where technological development promises a better future while being exploited by greed, as I seek optimism where hopes diminish.
